The ancient abbeys of the Canigou
it is a one hour's drive from campsite Le Brasilia and the beach resort of Canet en Roussillon to the magnificent Abbey of Saint Martin du Canigou. Built atop a rocky spur, between the 11th and 12th century, and completely surrounded by mountains, this Benedictine Abbey is since nearly a thousand years part of this sumptuous landscape , dominated by the Canigou mountain range.
To get there, you should depart from the village of Casteil, at the 'foot' of the Abbey. To access the Abbey, you should follow the marked trail through the garrigue, it is nonetheless a nearly 40 minutes walk. But it is worth the effort, and the visitors coming here can admire a jewel of Romanesque art. Haven of peace, tranquillity and serenity, the Abbey of Saint Martin du Canigou will surprise you with the beauty of its Abbey Church, its encrypted arch, its Lombard Tower, etc.
Built at the foot of the Canigou mountain range, in the village of Codalet, and in the vicinity of Prades, at 60 km from Le Brasilia, the Abbey Saint Michel de Cuxa is a Benedictine monastery dominated by an impressive 11th century bell-tower. It is a lot easier to get here than to the Abbey of Saint Martin du Canigou as you can park in the immediate vicinity.
